Auckland’s Waipuna Hotel and Conference Centre will host the annual Single Width Users’ Group Conference on August 22-23. The networking dinner was held on Wednesday night, 23rd August  was  MC’d by New Zealand’s pre-eminent comedy team 7DAYS stars Jeremy Corbett, Dai Henwood and Paul Ego.

For the first time day one was opened up to non-SWUG members. This proved to be a really positive move and there were many new companies attending who went away with some great knowledge. Ray Clarkson, acting Swug committee chairperson, said, the conference, themed Tangibly Trusted, will feature a line up of excellent speakers including leading financial journalist and editor, Bernard Hickey. 

As in previous years, the conference programme covered a variety of relevant fields and include site visits to Horton Media and to Paper Reclaim. The conference will also feature the Swug Awards for printing excellence and the Apprentice of the Year as well as a networking dinner.

Apprentice of the Year - 2017

Apprentice of the Year, Matthew Spencer, wasn’t expecting to win although he’d been put forward “a few times” previously for the award.

 The modest apprentice says it was “a bit of a shock” but it was business as usual at PMP the following day where he is one of those primarily responsible for running the Heidelberg M600pp heat set press and acting machine minder on the KBA 48pp press.

The 30-year-old PMP printer is only a month off qualifying and was the first apprentice the company took on after a break from training, four years ago.

In nominating Matthew, PMP print manager Tony Reid says “Matthew has excelled as an apprentice. Not only was he loyal and diligent, one of his greatest attributes was the ability to learn new tasks, retain the information and pass it on to less experienced print apprentices.”

“We have our own press training sign off procedures that Matthew has passed with flying colours. With these skills, he is a very universal printer on all presses in the plant, he can even assist in our sheet fed department.”

PMP Enterprise Park site manager, Craig Harrison went further, saying “Matthew had embraced the challenge last year of learning sheet fed printing and can now set up and run a basic job on a 10-colour Speedmaster Perfector.”

Selector Ian Gibson, FUJIFILM NZ’s national business manager graphic systems, says “There is a whole list of criteria for the award from attendance records to pass marks and an ability to interact with peers. In all, Matthew stood out and it was his ability to cross over into sheet fed printing that sealed the deal.”

“I believe he is able to run all the presses in the plant where he works. We were impressed.”

Ian says “Matthew will certainly benefit from the prize of a fully paid trip to Australia with sponsor DS Chemport which will only increase his knowledge of printing.”
